With paintings like this, I'm not very concerned with learning light or color. (who knows how Photoshopped the original image was.) Instead I'm trying to train my eye in seeing shadow shapes, value, and most importantly, I think, edge quality.
I think it's important to to studies like these once in a while because these are the paintings I can really play with "technique", learn from it, and apply it to personal work.
